iPhone 7 release date reportedly set for Friday, September 16th as rumor suggests ‘iPhone 6SE’ naming

As rumors about what the ‘iPhone 7’ update will include have reached wide consensus (similar design to iPhone 6s, redesigned antenna lines, new cameras, removal of headphone jack), news about availability and release date are starting to surface. Evan Blass, @evleaks, said he believes the iPhone 7 will be released week of September 12. Over the weekend, he strengthened his claim by indicating that his claim is referring to the retail release date, specifically that the new iPhone will go on sale on Friday, September 16th …

A September 16 date for new iPhone availability is a tad earlier than usual, ever since the iPhone moved to a September release month. Last year, the iPhone 6s hit stores for retail availability on September 25. The iPhone 6 debuted on September 19 in 2014 and the 2013 iPhone 5s was September 20.

With a sooner-than-usual release date for retail availability, this also pushes the expected date for Apple’s media press announcement.

The typical window is a two-week wait between announcement and release. This is not feasible in the 2016 calendar assuming a Friday September 16 release unless the event happened in late August. Assuming Apple wants to stay in the September timeframe, the most likely dates are September 5 or September 6 with pre-orders on that Friday (September 9) with the official launch just a week later. Apple should sent press invites for this event in mid-August which will officially confirm the date.

Blass is well known in the technology community for product leaks, especially regarding Android devices, although his record on Apple leaks is not perfect. He suggested that the 6s, 6s Plus and 6c would launch concurrently in 2015. It transpired the 4-inch iPhone SE would not debut until the following March.

Independent from Blass’s report, a report from Apfelpage suggests Apple may not call the device the iPhone 7 after all. It says Chinese supply chain sources have seen packaging and labelling that indicates the new phone will be called the ‘iPhone 6SE’. Given the more-iterative changes and similar design, it is not out of the question for Apple to brand the new iPhone as a continuation of the iPhone 6 line.

Personally, 6SE is a bit too much of a mouthful but who knows? With Apple breaking its typical tick-tock cycle of hardware launches, the name is up in the air. Apple could employ a new suffix, like 6X, or even a word like ‘Pro’ to denote the refinements over last year’s hardware.

The most likely option is probably iPhone 7 but it’s not impossible to think that Apple will change up its naming scheme alongside the juncture in product strategy. A significant design revamp, with glass enclosure and edge-to-edge screen, is reportedly set for the 2017 iPhone. Apple is seemingly moving to a 3-year major refresh cycle going forward for new iPhone hardware.

If the report is true, we’ll have the new iPhone in our hands in a month and a half. We’ll be looking for Apple to send out press invites to a media event in late August. The iPhone 7 is unlikely to be the only new hardware to be announced, the event will likely also feature the Apple Watch 2 and maybe new Macs or iPad updates. Stay tuned to 9to5Mac for the latest on iPhone 7 and Apple’s fall product announcements in general.

Video Depicts iPhone 7 Mockups in Gold, Rose Gold, and ‘Space Black’ – Mac Rumors

Another video has emerged online showing probable mockups of iPhone 7 units, but this time viewers are given a better idea of what the new handset might look like in three colors that Apple may offer this September.

The video was posted to YouTube channel ConceptsiPhone yesterday and shows the iPhone 7 in Rose Gold, Gold, and what the titling calls “Space Black”.

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 11.58.03
The mockups depict the now familiar design expectations such as protruding camera, repositioned antenna bands, and no headphone jack, but it’s the “Space Black” reference that stands out as a curiosity this time around.

Rumors in June pointed to the possibility that Apple was readying a darker variant of its traditional Space Grey color, described by one source as “close to black, though not quite black”. This so-called “new, darker shade” was thought to more closely resemble the look of the “space black” stainless steel Apple Watch, which is darker than the “space gray” aluminum Apple Watch Sport.

However, earlier this month, alleged photographs of Apple’s proposed iPhone 7 colorways stuck to showing the company’s typical four variants of Rose Gold, Space Gray, Gold, and Silver, similar to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

The “Space Black” variant depicted in the latest video does look darker than a typical iPhone 6s Space Grey unit, but the poor lighting makes identification a guessing game, and it could be just as likely that the unusual naming convention is simply a botched amalgam of previous rumors.

On the other hand, Apple has used different shades of “space gray” and “black and slate” across its device lineups over the years. The iPhone 6s and iPad Pro, for example, each have a lighter shade of “space gray” compared to the iPhone 5s and original iPad Air respectively.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are expected to be officially unveiled by Apple in the fall. In addition to the aforementioned features, the smartphones are expected to have faster Apple A10 processors, 32GB of base storage, improved waterproofing, and faster LTE and Wi-Fi.

Leaked video highlights alleged differences between ‘iPhone 7’ and iPhone 6s

A new video from China allegedly shows a semi-functional functional “iPhone 7” with the same features and design as previous photo and video leaks, offering another glimpse of what Apple’s next iPhone is expected to look like.

The new video from Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo doesn’t show anything previously unrevealed about the forthcoming “iPhone 7,” but it does offer a hands-on look at some of the anticipated changes, including moved antenna bands and a larger camera lens. In the video, a Chinese narrator compares the alleged “iPhone 7” to Apple’s iPhone 6s.

Near the end of the video, the host peels an irregular clear plastic film off the screen, which is not the screen protector found in the retail phone box. The host does hit the home button once after the film removal, but as the phone appears to be already on the home screen, the phone does not react. At no point is the screen touched by the user.

Another video published last week, also allegedly of the “iPhone 7,” showed speaker holes not in alignment with each other, suggesting a case manufacturer’s “blank,” mockup, or fake.

The alignment of the speaker holes in the newest video, however, is much more precise. The headphone jack in the most recent video is absent, the same as prior leaks.

The resolution of the video is the maximum allowed for Chinese social media at 320 by 240 pixels. As an effect of the low resolution, when the phone’s orientation is altered the iOS wallpaper parallax effect is not noticeable, if it exists at all.

Apple is expected to ship a pair of “iPhone 7” models this fall, most likely after a September reveal. This weekend’s video, like last week’s, does not show the anticipated 5.5.-inch “iPhone 7 Plus.”

iPhone 7 Plus Follow-up Images Reignite Smart Connector Rumors – Mac Rumors

Following yesterday’s circulation of iPhone 7 case images, NWE tposted another series of shots from the same “reliable” source, this time including what looks like the larger iPhone 7 Plus handset with dual-lens camera.

The additional iPhone 7 pictures offer a few more angles of a possibly fully assembled 4.7-inch device, without revealing anything particularly new, so we’ve reproduced them here merely for completion.

Readers will note that the power/standby button, volume controls and mute switch can be made out on the sides of the case, while the metallic Apple logo appears to have been fitted, but the images still leave us none the wiser as to whether this device has a headphone jack or not.

Latest iPhone 7 photo leak provides best look yet at new antenna lines design and larger protruding camera

About eight weeks away from the next iPhone debut, widely dubbed the iPhone 7, it seems like we have a pretty clear idea about what to expect: similar design to iPhone 6s, revamped cameras, upgraded internals, removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack. Although it doesn’t show anything we haven’t seen before (via NowhereElse.FR), a new high-quality photo of the iPhone 7 has surfaced that gives us the clearest image yet of what the back device will look like …

The image clearly depicts a 4.7 inch iPhone 7 back casing. The most obvious change is the redesigned antenna lines. Rather than extending lengthways across the main body of the phone like the current iPhone 6s, the iPhone 7 antenna lines are sleeker and smaller. As shown in the picture, the white antenna lines are only visible at the top and bottom edges of the device.

The photo also highlights the camera changes Apple is expected to unveil. The 4.7 inch iPhone 7 includes a substantially larger camera hole, about 25% wider in diameter compared to the iPhone 6/iPhone 6s. This will mean a camera quality upgrade of some kind although exact details are scarce. The megapixel count is not necessarily going to increase.

Apple may opt to keep the megapixel the same whilst letting the sensors take in much more light to achieve better end photos. The 5.5 inch iPhone 7 Plus is rumored to feature a dual-camera component system which will take even better photos thanks to the larger sensors. One rumor indicated that the Plus’ dual-cameras are a set of twin 12 megapixel sensors.

Aside from what can be seen in the latest photo leaks, there have been a cavalcade of other rumors with changes and new features for the iPhone 7. Most controversial of those is the removal of the headphone jack; Apple will instead rely on Lightning cable headphones or Bluetooth wireless headphones for audio output. Instead of a 3.5mm jack, users will find an additional speaker grille present on the bottom side of the product.

There have also been many rumors about a new Home Button, Apple is expected to drop the physical click button in favor of a capacitive touch-sensitive area. This will make the button flush with the rest of thee bezel and remove a common point of failure for iPhone repairs: the Home Button fails a lot. Apple could use its Taptic Engine to simulate physical presses, in a similar vein to the workings of the Force Touch Trackpad.

It also removes another hole from the chassis which ties in to another rumor that the iPhone 7 will be waterproof and dust-proof for additional resilience. By removing openings like the headphone jack and Home Button, it’s easier for Apple to fully seal the device from the outside world. With competitors offering waterproofed products for a couple of years now, it makes sense that Apple would join in … without sacrificing the visual beauty and simplicity of the iPhone design.

For the 5.5 inch model, there have also been rumors of a new Smart Connector on the back side of the device. There has been many reports going back and forward on this point, although case manufacturers seem confident: many leaked iPhone 7 Plus cases have holes to let the 3-pin connector be exposed. It’s still unclear what functionality the Smart Connector would provide, perhaps related to ‘wireless’ charging of some kind.

As ever, the new iPhone will feature internal upgrades such as a new processor and graphics chip, likely dubbed the Apple A10. There have also been several signs indicating that this year Apple will drop 16 GB storage from the lineup, with the new base model starting at 32 GB. Three SKUs would still be on offer, with 32/128/256 GB storage configurations.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is set to debut at a media event in September, following the usual Apple product cycle. This will be confirmed by Apple press invitations sent out a couple of weeks before, likely in late August.

What Apple iPhone 7 will look like

Wondering what Apple’s next iPhone is going to look like? Wonder no more.

This is what you can expect from the iPhone 7 in terms of looks:

iphone 7 concept

This is a concept of the iPhone 7 Plus made by 3D designer Martin Hajek, who often works closely with notorious gadget leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer.

The iPhone 7 Plus is said to exclusively feature a dual lens camera while the regular 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will feature a single, albeit larger, camera.

iphone 7 concept

Earlier on Wednesday, Hemmerstoffer leaked CAD (computer-aided design) renders on nowhereelse.fr, which were obtained from a Chinese source. 9to5Mac first spotted Hemmerstoffer’s report.

These supposedly leaked CAD renders of Apple’s next iPhone strongly support Hajek’s concept above.

Hemmerstoffer has an excellent record of reliability when it comes to gadget leaks, so there’s a strong possibility that these renders are accurate.

In his report, Hemmerstoffer posted other renders showing specific parts of the next iPhone, like the larger port hole for the camera of the regular 4.7-inch iPhone, as well as the dual lens camera that will allegedly feature exclusively on the larger Plus model.

iphone 7 cad leaks cam

Strangely, only the render supposedly showing the regular 4.7-inch iPhone includes the redesigned antenna stripes that rumors claim will wrap around the top and bottom edges of the phone rather than cutting across the back. The larger Plus model has no sign of antenna stripes at all, even though no rumors have suggested this kind of change.

The renders also reinforce the notion that Apple will ditch the headphone jack on its next iPhone, and a second speaker will take up its place.

Regardless of whether or not these CAD renders are real, they are at the very least consistent with other allegedly leaked images, renders, schematics, as well as rumors and leaked information. That said, as much as all these leaks and rumors support each other, no one will know for sure what the next iPhone will look like or what it does until Apple itself reveals the official details at its iPhone event in September.

Apple Leak Reveals iPhone 7 Late Changes

Given Apple is expected to retain all current iPhone 6S finishes for the iPhone 7 as well – Gold, Rose Gold, Silver, Space Gray – it doesn’t come at any cost and is a safe play which should pay off.

  1. Goodbye 64GB

In addition to this, leak goldmine Weibo has revealed Apple will scrap the 64GB storage option for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

On the surface this could be seen as a bad thing, but it is actually to allow Apple to upgrade storage for both phones with a new (and hugely welcome) 32GB entry level model followed by a 128GB midrange and 256GB top end.

This move would be widely applauded as Apple has been rightly criticised by many for sticking to the 16GB tier for so long on such a premium range. Meanwhile the jump to 128GB retains Apple’s love of upsell with the $100 more expensive middle tier long being the sweet spot for most buyers.

The Importance Of Hidden Gems

As welcome as both these leaks are, I suspect there will be a steady stream of additional ‘small surprises’ between now and September.

Why? Because word is already out that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus look just like the iPhone 6/6S and iPhone 6 Plus/6S Plus – the third year Apple won’t have made visual changes to its iPhones and the first time this has happened since the first iPhone in 2007. The models will also controversially drop the headphone jack.

This all makes for a tough sell, especially with the 2017 iPhone 8 (yes, Apple will skip the ‘7S’) looking set to be a radical and exciting reinvention. So expect regular splashes of good news to ‘magically’ appear over the coming weeks in an attempt to change the narrative of ‘same old, same old. Especially with Galaxy Note 7 leaks wowing crowds.

Now the big hope is that Apple can step up and the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are every bit as good as they will need to be…

Today in Apple history: Steve Jobs visits the Soviet Union

apple_flag_soviet

July 4, 1985: Steve Jobs visits Moscow for the one and only time, with the aim of selling Macs to the Russians.

During a two-day trip, Jobs lectured computer science students in the Soviet Union, attended a July Fourth party at the American embassy, discussed opening a Mac factory in Russia, and almost ran afoul of the KGB by praising assassinated Marxist revolutionary Leon Trotsky.

Coming shortly after reformist leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s rise to power, Jobs’ trip to Moscow came at a tough time for the Apple co-founder. He had lost a political war with John Sculley, and was left in virtual isolation after being abandoned by the higher-ups running the company. Looking for something to do, Jobs went on a trip overseas where he visited Paris, Tuscany and eventually Moscow.

In Paris, Jobs met future-U.S. President George Bush, who discussed with him the idea that distributing Macs to the Russian people could help provoke “revolution from below.” At the time, the less-powerful Apple II had just been launched in Russia, which remained very guarded about technology being available for the masses.

Intriguingly, Jobs claimed he had the “feeling” that the attorney who helped organize his trip to the Soviet Union “worked for the CIA or the KGB” although he never elaborated on this in public. The trip was, however, notable enough that it received a mention in Jobs’ FBI file — mentioning that while there he met with an unnamed professor from the Academy of Science, “to discuss possible marketing of [Apple Computer’s] product.”

Although Jobs’ dream of paving the way for a Russian Apple division didn’t pay off at that time, there is one other fascinating development from the visit. Staying in the hotel with Jobs was Apple VP Al Eisenstat. One night, Eisenstat was awoken to the sound of a nervous computer programmer knocking on his door. When he answered it, the coder pushed a floppy disk into his hand which, upon Eisenstat’s return to the U.S., turned out to have accurate handwriting recognition software on it.

According to several members of the Apple Newton team I’ve spoken to, this code became the basis for the handwriting recognition built into Apple’s MessagePad series of devices.
